PDX GRANULATED / DESIGN WEEK PORTLAND / OCTOBER 2014

borderlands_grain_cloud 1 MB

As part of NORTH’s Sound Designed Panel (http://www.designweekportland.com/events/sound-designed-sound-music-narrative-and-space) during Design Week Portland, composer and software developer Chris Carlson (www.modulationindex.com) will mix, deconstruct and re-interpret field recordings captured in advance by attendees and the general public.

What is the sound of Portland? What happens when recordings from all five quadrants of the city are re-imagined via Borderlands Granular?

Thank you for your interest!

Here’s what we ask:

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Walk or sit or stand, stop and listen.

2. Think of your self as a microphone, spin around, how does this change the sound?

3. Make a 15-30 second recording from a location in Portland, OR. * **

4. Email the recording by midnight October 5th!

IMPORTANT! These recordings will be part of a sound performance AND THEY WILL BE POSTED TO A PUBLIC SOUNDCLOUD ACCOUNT AND BE MADE AVAILABLE FOR ANYONE TO DOWNLOAD AND REMIX!

Sharing your recording indicates you are aware of and consent to this use.

If you would like notification of when tracks are posted to the group Soundcloud page, please sign up at http://eepurl.com/EkU3 and click “Associated Projects – Art/Audio” or join:https://soundcloud.com/groups/pdx-granulated!

*THIS IS NOT A PERFORMANCE, THE SOUND DOESN’T HAVE TO BE/SHOULDN’T BE MUSICAL, DON’T THINK YOU NEED TO RECORD AN “EVENT”. WE’RE INTERESTED IN THE SOUND OF WHERE YOU ARE.

** IPHONE (IO7)

  1. Find the “Voice Memo” App installed on your phone.
  2. Press the red button
  3. After 15-30 seconds (your choice!), press “DONE”. You will see a prompt     “Save voice memo”. Type in your location (actual address, or intersection), and your name if you’d like. Tap “Save’
  4. You will see your sound file stored right below the red “record” circle.
  5. Tap the title and you will see the option to listen to your track, as well as delete, edit or email it.
  6. Email your recording to – “designweek@north.com” – and please put #PDXGranulated #ListenWhereYouAre in the subject line.

** ANDROID/GOOGLE PHONE

  1. Install Smart Voice Recorder from the Google Play Store.
  2. Launch Smart Voice Recorder, ensure that “skip silence” is not selected at the bottom right and press the “Start Recording” button to start recording audio.
  3. When you’ve finished, press the “Finish” button in the bottom left, and give the recording a name. Type in your location (actual address, or intersection), and your name if you’d like. Press “OK”.
  4. You are now at the “Recordings” list. Press the small downward-facing arrow on the bottom right of the recording.
  5. A menu appears, tap “Share” and select your email program.
  6. Email your recording to – “designweek@north.com” – and please put #PDXGranulated #ListenWhereYouAre in the subject line.

THANK YOU!
